How come my safety switch won’t turn back on?
If there is a fault in your circuitry somewhere, whether it’s due to a faulty appliance, failed wiring or a blown fuse, the safety switch won’t turn back on. When this happens, it’s a sign that the reason it tripped in the first place may still not be resolved, or another electrical problem has cropped up.
Being unable to turn the safety switch back on can be frustrating, especially if you think you’ve solved the electrical fault that caused the switch to trip. Luckily there are a few things you can try to get the switch to stay on. Detailed below are the various steps you can take to ensure your switch will remain on so that your electricity can flow freely.
Steps you can take to reset your safety switch
Check your fuses
As well as the safety switch, check if any of the fuse switches have also tripped. If they have, this gives a clue as to where the problem lies – for example, if the fuse controlling the wiring for lighting has blown, there’s usually a problem with the lights. If all the fuses are fully functional, the problem may well be with an appliance.
Try to reset the switch
Flick the switch into the “on” position. If it flicks back off again, move on to the next step.
Unplug all the appliances in the house
Even if you’re pretty sure which appliance is acting up, it’s still worth unplugging them all. That way, there shouldn’t be any reason for the safety switch to remain off.
Switch the safety switch back on
In most cases, if the fault lies with an appliance (which is the most common reason for the safety switch to trip), it should stay on. If it doesn’t and there isn’t an obvious problem with a blown fuse, it’s probably time to call in a licensed electrician.
Switch the appliances on one by one
Using a process of elimination, it should be possible to isolate which appliance it is that’s causing the safety switch to trip out as soon as it’s switched back on.
What to do if your safety switch still isn’t resetting
If you’ve tried all of the above steps and the safety switch still won’t stay on, it’s probably time to call in a licensed electrical contractor. They will have the tools and expertise to swiftly diagnose the cause of the problem and take suitable steps to resolve it.

Replacing a blown fuse or simply not using an appliance that’s causing your safety switch to trip out are simple, effective methods of resolving the problem. In many cases, simply checking fuses and switching appliances on one at a time so that the faulty item is easy to identify is sufficient. If these measures don’t work, you’ll probably need the services of a licensed electrician.
