How to Change a Light Bulb

There are many different types of light bulbs in the average home, but they all share one common trait: eventually, they need to be changed. While the specific steps may vary depending on the type of light bulb you have, the basic process is generally the same.

Changing a Light Bulb

First, locate the light fixture and turn off the power. Next, remove the old light bulb by unscrewing it or gently pushing it out of its socket. Once the old light bulb has been removed, insert the new light bulb into the socket and screw it in place. Finally, turn on the power and test the new light bulb to make sure it’s working properly. With just a few simple steps, you can easily change a light bulb when it burns out.

For the more difficult or unique light bulbs in your home, follow the guide below.

High ceilings

If you have high ceilings, being able to reach the light bulb is the first hurdle. One option is to use an extendable pole with a hook on the end, which are available at most hardware stores. Another option is to hire a professional to change the light bulb for you. This is often the safest and most efficient option, and it will save you the time and hassle of having to do it yourself.

However, if you decide to do it yourself, the first step is to identify the type of light fixture you have. If it’s a recessed light, you need to find the trim ring and remove it. Next, unscrew the old bulb and screw in the new one. Once the new bulb is in place, replace the trim ring and turn on the power.

Pendant lights or chandelier bulbs

If you have a pendant light or chandelier, the process is similar to bulbs on high ceilings. First, locate the wires that are holding up the globe or shade. Unscrew these wires and lower the globe or shade down. Next, unscrew the old bulb and screw in the new one. Once the new bulb is in place, raise up the globe or shade and screw the wires back in place. Finally, turn on the power.

Downlights

First of all, make sure that you disconnect the electricity supply to the light fitting before starting work on it. Once you have done this, remove the glass shade or bezel that covers the bulb. You may need to use a small screwdriver to help with this. Next, unscrew the old bulb and screw in the new one, being careful not to touch it with your bare hands as this could shorten its lifespan. Finally, replace the glass cover.

Oven lights

Changing the light in your oven is a simple process that only takes a few minutes. First, locate the light cover on the inside of the oven. It’s usually circular and made of glass. To remove it, simply unscrew the retaining screws and pull it off. Once the cover is removed, you will see the bulb.

It’s important to note that oven bulbs can get very hot, so be sure to wear gloves or use a cloth to avoid getting burned. To remove the bulb, twist it counterclockwise until it comes loose. Then, insert the new bulb and twist it clockwise until tight. Finally, replace the light cover and screw it back into place.

Fridge lights

If your fridge has a light that needs changing, it’s a relatively easy process. First, find the light cover. It’s usually located near the top of the fridge and may be either clear or frosted. Second, use a flathead screwdriver to remove the screws that secure the light cover in place. Third, pull out the old light bulb and insert a new one. Be sure to match the wattage and voltage of the old bulb. Finally, screw the light cover back in place and turn on the fridge.

How to dispose of expired light bulbs

Most people don’t give much thought to their light bulbs – they buy them, use them, and then throw them away when they burn out. However, did you know that there is a special way to dispose of expired light bulbs? Due to the fact that they contain small amounts of mercury, simply tossing them in the trash is not recommended.

Instead, you should take them to a recycling centre that specialises in handling these types of materials. You can also check with your local hardware store or home improvement centre – many of these businesses have programs in place for recycling expired light bulbs.

If you need help changing your light bulbs, you can hire a residential or commercial electrician like ANE Electrical to be safe.
